When the .NET universal TLD was initially introduced in 1985, along with the first domain extensions on the Internet, it was planned to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Given that there were no special rules about the usage of the top-level domain, though, dot NET domains were obtained and used for different purposes and by scores of people. This domain extension represents a perfect alternative to .COM, especially if the desirable domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
